Description
In Capitals and in brackets as part of the historical record is the original description added in 2014 , much of which is inconsistent with both the current state of the memorial and images of it when it was first created (PLINTH WITH INSCRIPTION. FORMALLY SURMOUNTED BY AN OBELISK, NOW MISSING.PITH HELMET, SWORD AND CONTAINER IS AT THE FOOT OF THE BASE.). All in white stone a three stepped rectangular base , the first and third step with straight sides , the second with concave curved sides , on which is a rectangular plinth with sides sloping inwards towards the top , three faces of which contain the dedication and names. On the top part of the plinth above the dedication on all four sides is deeply carved foliate decoration including on the front face a simple shield with three roses (the arms of Southampton ). Surmounting the plinth is a rectangular obelisk tapering towards the top , towards the bottom of the front face of the obelisk is a simple red cross enclosed in a decorative circle , thought to be the symbol of the Red Cross .The inscription is incised and coloured black . The makers name is incised on the bottom level of the base on the front face towards the left . Adjacent to the main memorial is a later addition , consisting of a small oak plinth , with an angled top on which is a brass plaque with a further commemoration . This latter is thought to have been added as the inscriptions on the original memorial have been eroded and are now illegible .
