History
1940S: TABLETS WITH NAMES MOVED WHEN HOSPITAL CHANGED SITE AFTER THE FORMATION OF THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE. 2003: THE HOSPITAL WAS CLOSED FOR INTERNAL REFURBISHMENT FOR SIX MONTHS IN ORDER TO CREATE A 'MILLENNIUM SUITE' FOR SERIOUSLY ILL PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. FUNDING PROVIDED BY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS. 2020: Neither of the boards has been renovated, restored or refurbished. Both are currently (temporarily) installed in the Outpatients building as the main hospital is soon to be demolished and a new building erected on the same site. The new building will become the Hythe and Dibden War Memorial Hospital. The wooden boards will be mounted inside the hospital but a new memorial will be placed outside but within contact of the new building. The local community are very conscious of the fact that it is the Hospital itself that is the war memorial carrying on the tradition of the first two buildings which were financed, in part by public subscriptions and donations.
