According to both Hornshaw and Fowler and Malcolm Bull (see references)
the memorial was originally intended to be erected outside the Town Hall but that idea was dropped
reportedly on the grounds that to do so would constantly remind relatives of their loss.

- Helmeted soldier in greatcoat standing in contemplative pose resting on rifle which is held in front of him with the butt on the ground. Figure surmounts square granite pedestal and three stepped stone base. Inscription in incised lettering.
