Description
Complex sculptural group. Pillar surmounted by a shrouded female figure with bowed head, holding a wreath in left hand and symbolising mourning. Pillar rests on cruciform plinth, on which a figure of Britannia in helmet with banner lays a crown of laurels on the body of a fallen soldier who is reaching for his gas mask. Names engraved on six pillars around the memorial.

  • Book-The Fighting McKays of Macclesfield-a story of service and sacrifice with the 22nd, the Cheshire Regiment, by David Hill. This book relates how three brothers-Ernest, Charles and Herbert McKay were killed in WW1, two sisters died in the flu pandemic at the end of the war, another brother-Arthur was killed in Burma in WW2, their father (Robert) died in Macclesfield of fever contracted in the Boer War, and their brother Walter died of fever in South Africa while fighting in the Boer War.
