Description
CIRCULAR PEDESTAL OF WESTMORELAND MARBLE WITH FOUR FIGURES IN THE CHARACTER OF CAPTIVES OR VANQUISHED ENEMIES, SYMBOLISING THE BATTLES OF ST., VINCENT, THE NILE, COPENHAGEN AND TRAFALGAR. BETWEEN THE FIGURES ARE FOUR BAS-RELIEFS IN BRONZE, REPRESENTING GREAT NAVAL ACTIONS. THE REST OF THE PEDESTAL IS DECORATED WITH LIONS' HEADS AND LAUREL FESTOONS. IN THE UPPER PART IS INSCRIBED "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY." THE CIRCULAR PEDESTAL IS SURMOUNTED BY THE FIGURES OF NELSON, VICTORY AND DEATH: THE FIGURE OF NELSON HAS ONE FOOT ON A CONQUERED ENEMY AND THE OTHER ON A CANNON. HE IS RECEIVING FOUR NAVAL CROWNS UPON HIS SWORD WITH HIS LEFT HAND FROM THE FIGURE OF VICTORY. THE FIGURE OF DEATH LIES BELOW. THE FIGURE OF A SEAMAN APPROACHES HIM FROM THE RIGHT SIDE.

2005, JAN: WALTON GROUP PLC OF HORTON HOUSE IN ATLANTIC COURT HAS PURCHASED LAND ON WHICH MEMORIAL IS LOCATED AND IS PLANNING TO RESTORE BUT IS HAVING DIFFICULTY OBTAINING FUNDING FOR LASER CLEANING. 2003: PLANS TO RESTORE THE MEMORIAL AT THE COST OF £100,000 - EDMUND KIRBY.
