Description
Two stepped base surmounted by a pointed topped pillar. The whole stands on a raised site level with the local playing fields and reached by a flight of steps at the front. Beneath the pediment is inscribed Pro Patria, above a laurel wreath with a mourning ribbon hanging below. The names are cast on bronze tablets - the WW1 above the WW2. On the step beneath are two parallel tablets bearing the names of four men from each war added recently. A low wall surrounds the grassy slope upon which the memorial is stood on a semi-circular paved area backed by shrubbery, with the Legh Street Park behind.

Reference
  • Wigan Observer, 04/06/1920: Report of discussion by Golborne District Council on proposals for a war memorial - which had included a monument by the Police Station, but which now centred on a letter from the Labour Club proposing improving the cricket ground by tree planting to become a 'proper recreation ground', and erecting a memorial within the site. As the land was on lease from Lord Newton, further negotiations were needed - so the Chairman was left to take it forward with the War Memorial Committee.
  • Wigan Observer, 13/10/1921: Report of further discussion by Golborne District Council on proposals for a war memorial. Lord Newton's agent responded to request for security of tenure on the proposed site for the memorial - a renewable lease of 21 years was the longest period which could be offered. There was a proposal that the matter be postponed in view of the trade depression. Another meeting of the Committee was agreed.
