SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE HONOURABLE FRANCIS WHELER HOOD,/ LIEUTENANT-COLONEL IN THE 3RD REGIMENT OF FOOT GUARDS,/ ASSISTANT-ADJUTANT GENERAL TO THE 2ND DIVISION OF THE FORCES/ UNDER THE MARQUIS OF WELLINGTON,/ WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION WITH THE ENEMY, AT AIRE, IN GASCONY,/ IN THE 33RD YEAR OF HIS AGE, ON THE 2ND OF MARCH, 1814,/ AND WAS INTERRED IN THE CEMETERY OF THAT PLACE WITH MILITARY HONOURS./ THIS SIMPLE MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY CAROLINE, HIS WIDOW,/ IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF HIS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE WORTH.
