Description
Wall-mounted oak board, with pitched pediment that contains a relief carving depicting the West Sussex coat of arms. Beneath are three inset glazed panels, on which the names of casualties are engraved: the first two panels relate to the First World War; the third panel relates to the Second World War. (For unknown reasons, World War 1 casualty W. Chapman was omitted from this memorial, whereas he was included on the Constabulary's original WW1 plaque and Roll of Honour - see War Memorials Register references 16668 and 16803).

  • The Times 27 Feb.-21 March 1942 Police Sgt W J Avis was shot and killed by a Canadian deserter who he was trying to arrest.
  • Hampshire Telegraph 13/3/1942 (page 10) reported that Special Constable Frederick J. Fuller (who had been injured in the same incident on 26/2/1942 in which W.J. Avis had been shot dead in Bognor by a Private of the Canadian Light Infantry) had died.
