- Description
- An elaborate wall monument in two parts divided by a cornice above which is an elaborate piece of sculpture. On a pedestal rest two urns on arch of which is a shield (see below). Military trophies cross behind the pedestal, the whole draped in fabric at the front of which a lion couchant holds a banner aloft. Resting on the two urns, a closed garlanded urn surmounted by a roman oil-lamp with issuing flame. This sculpture is mounted on grey marble shaped like a gothic arch. Lower part of the tablet is rectangular with a curved apron between two fluted pilastre. Left shield blazon: dexter: (yorke) arg a saltire az. sinister: vair a bend arg, three stags passant. Right shield blazon: (yorke) arg a saltire az

- SACRED TO THE MEMORY/ OF MARTIN YORKE ESQR OF BISHOPS DOWN GROVE/ A FATHER TO THE FATHERLESS AND FRIEND TO ALL;/ IN HIS YOUTH HE WAS A BRAVE DEFENDER OF HIS COUNTRY,/ BUT IN MATURER YEARS LAID ASIDE THE SWORD,/ AND BY THE PRACTICE OF EVERY DUTY WHICH COULD ENDEAR/ HIM TO HIS NEIGHBOURHOOD;/ WAS AS USEFUL IN RETIREMENT AS HE HAD BEEN ACTIVE IN THE FIELD/ BELOVED RESPECTED AND REGRETTED,/ HE SUNK TO REST THE 27TH APRIL 1798,/ AGED 67 YEARS/ IN REMEMBRANCE ALSO OF HIS BROTHER/ LIEUT COL WILLIAM YORKE OF THE 69TH REGT OF FOOT,/ "A FAITHFUL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE/ ISRAELITE INDEED IN WHOM THERE WAS NO GUILE"/ HE DEPARTED THIS LIFE/ MARCH THE 22ND 1793,/ AGED 50 YEARS
