Description
Sandstone memorial in the form of a small Calvary cross under a pitched roof, set on a tapering octagonal shaft, mounted on a square plinth, with four octagonal steps below. The original Great War Dedication was incised in Celtic script around the upper faces of the top step, with the Names incised around the faces of the step below. These inscriptions have eroded over the years and some lettering is illegible. In 2011 Sefton Parish Council installed two slate tablets on the plinth. The tablet set at 9 o'clock carries the names of those killed in WW1. Although based on the names originally inscribed on the steps below, initials and middle names have mostly been omitted, and there are two errors visible - one 'Arthur' appears as 'Aruthur', and 'James Forester Orchardson' appears as 'James F Richardson'. The tablet set at 3 o'clock carries the WW2 Names. In 2012 a third tablet was installed on the 6 o'clock face of the plinth by the Council to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. It carries the Remembrance verse by Laurence Binyon. The red rose of Lancashire and the cross from the arms of the Sefton family appear on the three tablets.
