History
In 1991 the memorial was damaged. The cross was destroyed and the pieces held in storage whilst the plinth remained in the churchyard of St Chad’s. The local community decided to restore the memorial led by the King's Regiment Association (Knowsley). War Memorials Trust became involved in the project. In autumn 2005 the charity marked the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II with a direct mail shot asking supporters and members to help it protect and conserve war memorials. Kirkby war memorial was featured. At the beginning of 2007 work was completed. The memorial has received grant monies in excess of £10,000 from War Memorials. A combination of the Anniversary Appeal award of £8,760 from the direct mail shot and a David Graves grant of £2,000 in 2007. A Grants for War Memorials award funded by English Heritage and The Wolfson Foundation was also made.
