- History
- ACCORDING TO NEWSPAPER REPORTS THIS MEMORIAL UNDERWENT SEVERAL CHANGES FROM ITS ORIGINAL DESIGN - OWING TO LACK OF FUNDS DETAILS OF ORNAMENTAL WORK HAD TO BE OMITTED. FINAL NOTE SHORTLY BEFORE THE UNVEILING REFERS TO A FIGURE OF CHRIST BUT THIS IS ALSO NOW ABSENT. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHETHER THE FINAL DESIGN HAD TO BE SLIMMED DOWN TO ITS PRESENT FORM, WHETHER THE FIGURE WAS STOLEN, OR WHETHER IN FACT THE PRESENT MEMORIAL IS A MORE RECENT REPLACEMENT.
