Comments: It was hoped to raise £10,000. £414 was used for the war memorial and the rest earmarked to give financial help to sons of Old Alleynians who died in the war. By 1934 ll of these boys had been educated and there were no claimants and the money was invested to form a permanent scholarship fund administered by the Gilkes memorial Trust.

The list of names on file shows 481 boys and 4 masters killed, while 'The Dulwich Yearbook 1921 refers to 485 Old Alleynians known to have died. The architect and the unveiler were both Old Alleynians.
