Description
In the Crypt, Nelson Chamber south west bay, a sculpted stone wall panel with a shield of arms surrounded by a wreath and inscribed scroll in a rectangular panel above the memorial inscription. Below is a narrow horizontal panel carved in high relief with an ornamented baton and sword.

IN MEMORY OF / FIELD-MARSHAL / SIR DONALD MARTIN STEWART, BARONET, / G.C.B., G.C.S.I., C.I.E., D.C.L., LL.D., / BORN NEAR FORRES, MARCH 1, 1824, / DIED AT ALGIERS MARCH 26, 1900. / FOR FIFTY-NINE YEARS HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY / WITH DISTINCTION IN INDIA, ABYSSINIA, AND / AFGHANISTAN. / HE WAS COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IN INDIA FROM 1881 TO 1885, / AND DIED A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL OF THE / SECRETARY-OF-STATE FOR INDIA AND / GOVERNOR OF THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA. / A SUCCESSFUL GENERAL, A WISE ADMINISTRATOR, / A HIGH MINDED AND CONSCIENTIOUS PUBLIC SERVANT.
