Description
In the North Transept, Middlesex Chapel, a marble wall panel carved in high relief with a figure of Christ the Consoler and other figures in the upper section, military trophies in the lower section. In the upper panel the central figure of Christ seated is surrounded by angels, mourning women, children and at lower right a dying soldier; in the lower panel is an inscribed scroll in the centre and military objects. The two sections are separated by a narrow band with a Biblical inscription. Associated brass plaque below,with inlaid border and lettering in black, red and green mosaic. The border consists of lengths of laurel branches within a black linear edging, a square motif of laurel leaves with berries at each corner. In the centre of the plaque are two incised emblems of three spears with crossed shell cases encircled by a laurel wreath. The commemorative inscription, incl. officers names but only total numbers of other ranks, and the names of the commemorated are divided into those killed in action, died of wounds or died of disease in the Crimea or New Zealand. Below the plaque is an enamelled circular badge of the Middlesex Regt with a shield-shaped brass plaque (now missing) referring to the 2 laid-up regimental colours hanging above the memorial.
