Cross: CAPT T R COLYER FERGUSON VC/ 2ND NORTHAMPTON REGIMENT/ DIED OF WOUNDS JULY 31ST 1917 Scroll: BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH/ AND I WILL GIVE THEE A CROWN OF LIFE/ TO THE MEMORY OF A BELOVED SON/ THOMAS RIVERSDALE/ COLYER FERGUSSON V.C./ 2ND LIEUTENANT ACTING CAPTAIN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE REGIMENT/ THIRD AND YOUNGEST SON OF THOMAS COLYER AND THE LATE BEATRICE/ STANLEY COLYER-FERGUSSON OF IGHTHAM MORE/ BORN 18TH FEBRUARY 1896. DIED 31ST JULY 1917/ HE WAS EDUCATED AT HARROW AND WHEN ABOUT TO ENTER ORIEL COLLEGE/ OXFORD THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR BROKE OUT HE JOINED THE PUBLIC/ SCHOOLS BATTALION IN 1914. OBTAINED A COMMISSION IN NORTHAMPTON-/ SHIRE REGIMENT IN MARCH 1915. HE FELL AT BELLEWARDE IN THE/ 3RD BATTLE OF YPRES AFTER A BRILLIANT AND SUCCESFUL ATTACK IN/ WHICH HE LED HIS FEW MEN AGAINST GREAT ODDS AND PERSONALLY/ CAPTURED TWO MACHINE GUNS FOR WHICH HE WAS POSTHUMOUSLY/ AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS/ THE OFFICIAL REPORT OF THE ACTION CONCLUDES "THE CONDUCT OF/ THIS OFFICER FORMS AN AMAZING RECORD OF DASH, GALLANTRY/ AND SKILL FOR WHICH NO REWARD CAN BE TOO GREAT HAVING/ REGARD TO THE IMPORTNANCE OF THE POSITION WON"/ THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD:/ AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN./ AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
