  • Nottingham Journal, Saturday 13th October 1917 (page 4) reported: A TEMPLE OF HEROISM. Lord H. Bentinck’s Suggestion for a National War Memorial LENTON CONSERVATIVES AND THE LATE CAPTAIN A. BALL Further tribute to the imperishable deeds of Nottingham’s gallant young airman (the late Captain A. Ball V.C.. D.S.O., M.C.), was paid at the Lenton Unionist Cub. Nottingham, last night, when, in the presence of a numerous assembly (which included Ald. A. Ball), Lord Henry Bentinck unveiled an artist's proof framed photograph of the deceased officer, after the portrait recently painted by Mr. Denholm Davis. The picture is the gift of Mr. L. Nevins (chairman of the club's bouse committee), whg modesty. (Hear, hear.) He stood as the epitome everything courageous, dashing, and brave, and as long as the Empire lasted would be resounded his wonderful deeds, as well as those of all others of our brave men. (Applause.) Continuing, Lord Henry declared a wonderful temple ought to be erected to the memory of the youth of the nation, wherein men could kneel with bowed heads and gain courage in the hour of need. (Hear, hear.) It was up to the nation to express its gratitude, for upon the youth of the nation the burden had fallen. Nor should we forget the noble sacrifice made by the parents; he was filled with emotion when he thought how well and bravely they kept a stout heart. Not only had the lads fought for England but for humanity, for this country stood as a bulwark for the world, seeking not to destroy Germany, but to win it to Christianity and to convert the nation from the error of their ways. “So long as the Empire stands they will not be allowed to overturn all the laws of God and man that brute military force which they alone practice.'’ (Applause.) In conclusion his lordship called upon them to dedicate themselves to the cause of humanity, taking inspiration from it and building a new society on the principles not of brute force but of fatherly love. (Applause.) www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001896/19171013/107/0004
