Description
One of five similar cast bronze plaques erected at tram depots around the city (see WMR 10744, 25078 and 100015 for the three still existing, and WMR 100065 for the one erected at Tramways Headquarters, but since lost). This is the only plaque still in its original position. The plaque is nowy-headed with the City's coat of arms within a shield at the centre of the arch supported by floral display behind a scroll bearing the legend Pro Rege et Patria (For King and Country). The dedication is in a panel above the five columns each bearing 62 names, and there is a further dedication beneath the columns. The pilasters are decorated thus: Left, top: Lion en passant facing inwards. Left, Centre: full length soldier in profile with head bowed and arms reversed. Left, Lower: Shield with St George's cross surrounded by a laurel wreath. Right, top: Lion en passant facing inwards. Right, centre: full length Naval figure in profile with head bowed and arms reversed. Right, Lower: Shield with white ensign surrounded by a laurel wreath.
