NORTHANTS REGT., ONLY SON OF THE/ PASTOR OF THIS CHURCH./ HE VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE AND AFTER WINNING/ THE MILITARY CROSS FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY FELL/ WHILE LEADING HIS MEN TO AN ATTACK ON CONTALMAISON,/ FRANCE, ON JULY 8TH. 1916, - IN HIS 28TH. YEAR./ HE SPENT FIVE YEARS AS A TUTOR AT THE ANGLO-CHINESE COLLEGE./ TIENTSIN AND WAS PREPARING FOR WIDER SERVICE WITH THE L.M.S./ WHEN THE OUTBREAK OF WAR INTERFERED WITH HIS PLANS./ THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH AND CONGREGATION/ (AND A FEW OTHER FRIENDS) IN RECOGNITION OF HIS STERLING CHRISTIAN/ CHARACTER AND NOBLE SELF-SACRIFICE./
