Valuing our volunteers
Volunteers have long played a significant role at Duxford and are integral to welcoming and shaping the customer experience. As a Membership Welcome Volunteer you can now be part of a dynamic team promoting the new IWM Membership programme and interacting with our members and customers.
Background to the role & IWM Membership
Joining the Retail and Admission team as a volunteer is your chance to make a real difference to every customer’s journey and to IWM’s legacy. Your actions day to day could enable us to be ‘the go to place’ for membership and promote the sustainability of the museum for the long term.
Since launching we have welcomed over 6,000 new members with an aim to increase this to 17,000 over the next 24 months.
The Membership offer is tiered and delivered via two levels:
IWM Membership – Prices from £35.00
•Free entry and fast-track access to Churchill War Rooms, HMS Belfast and IWM Duxford
•Membership offers across all five museums
IWM Premium Membership – Prices from £55.00
•All of the above plus 15% discount in IWM Shops and cafes at our branches
•Free access to paid exhibitions at IWM London and IWM North
•Exclusive discounts and priority access to selected IWM events
•20% discount on standard air show tickets and access to the air show members’ enclosure at IWM Duxford

Responsibilities and Duties
•On a daily basis you will be interacting with our customers promoting our Membership scheme and directing members to their fast track entrance.
•You will work closely with our Admission staff who will process the transactions that you promote and to assist them with related administrative tasks. You are not required to have cash handling experience as this will be handled by the Admissions staff
Air show support
•Our air shows entertain thousands of visitors so if you can volunteer on these days your experience gained from day to day promotions will be crucial to interacting with a diverse audience. Responsibilities will include welcoming members to their dedicated enclosure, proactively promoting Membership to visitors and encouraging Standard Members to upgrade to Premium Membership. Additional training will be given from the admission team up to and on the air show day itself.
To provide support to the Membership team for the delivery of IWM Membership events across a range of dates throughout the year and some occasional mobile/pop up membership advocacy services within IWM Duxford
•You will be regularly interacting with members and using these opportunities to provide information about the benefits they can enjoy both during their visit to IWM Duxford and across all five IWM branches.
•To work in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines and comply with any on-site risk assessments relevant to the Membership Welcome Volunteer role.
•From time to time the IWM Membership team issue evaluation surveys to our Neighbours of Duxford; you may be asked to assist with the correlation of the paper surveys once they are completed
•The scope of this role description is not all encompassing and may be reviewed on an on-going basis as IWM Membership and associated events continue to evolve.
Where will I be based?
On a day to day activity volunteers will be based in and outside of our Visitor Centre depending on visitor number and task priorities.
On air show and event days, volunteers will be based across the site in a pre-agreed area in-line with our membership strategy
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking up to 40 volunteers who are passionate about IWM’s subject and mission and who thrive on meeting and talking with new people.

•An interest in IWMs subject and mission
•A basic level of fitness as you will be desk based and occasionally on your feet
•Have a friendly and welcoming style
•Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and active listening skills
•Have the capacity to be confident with a positive attitude

Experience of providing customer service
Management & Support
Volunteers will be under the guidance of both our friendly Membership Team and our Admissions Team.
Ideally we are seeking volunteers who are available preferably 3 days a month (Monday –Sunday) on a day to suit you. Volunteering is encouraged 3 days a month so you can get the most out of this role and the training provided for you. A minimum of 12 visits per annum is essential and again these are on days to suit you
Volunteer hours are 9.45am to 3.45pm which begins with a morning brief in the Visitor Centre.
Training & Selection
Chosen applicants are asked to attend a Welcome Session followed by a Training Session at IWM Duxford. You will be asked to clarify your availability for this in your application. All role related training will be provided. The Welcome Session will include an introduction to the history of volunteering at Duxford, a talk on the Membership scheme and an outline of the role. The Training Session will include a more in-depth study to the role itself and your involvement within it and will take place on a separate day to the Welcome Session
Volunteers are asked to wear either dark trousers or skirts with smart, comfortable footwear. A branded IWM red polo shirt and a red fleece will be provided for your volunteering.
