As part of IWM’s Yemen: Inside a Crisis season, spoken word artist Amerah Saleh has been working with young people from Manchester and Liverpool to help them create their own original work that could be performed publicly.
IWM commissioned Amerah to lead a series of creative writing and performance workshops for young people from the Yemeni Community Association in Eccles, Manchester and the Liverpool Arabic Centre. The groups explored thoughts and ideas around Yemen, the humanitarian crisis and the concept of home. More than 30 young people learned skills in writing and performing original poetry and 14 performed their piece ‘Our Yemen’ at Manchester Piccadilly Station in July 2019.
'One of the things I am most passionate about is hearing Yemenis tell their stories, share their memories and it feels really good to know that I have been able to help these young people to do just that,' says Amerah.
