'Soldiers Don't Go Mad'
Join author and journalist Charles Glass as he introduces his book, Soldiers Don’t Go Mad, which explores Craiglockhart Hospital, a facility used during the First World War to treat ‘Shell Shock’, now known as PTSD.
Charles Glass will discuss the lives of the patients and medical staff at the hospital, and the treatments Craiglockhart offered. Among the patients were Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, who would go on to create some of the most impactful poetry of the twentieth century, vividly depicting the horrors of war in the trenches.
Following Charles Glass’ talk, live Q&A and book signing, you will have the opportunity to explore IWM’s temporary exhibition War and the Mind, exploring the psychological impact of conflict.

About 'Soldiers Don't Go Mad'
Soldiers Don’t Go Mad explores the experiences of 1,800 soldiers treated for shell shock at Craiglockhart Hospital, with a significant focus on the relationship between Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. Drawing on rich source materials, as well as Glass’s own deep understanding of trauma and war, Soldiers Don't Go Mad tells the story of the soldiers and doctors who struggled with the effects of industrial warfare on the human psyche.
