100 Years of History

Gloster Javelin with Hawker Hunters over RAF Duxford

100 Years of History

Established at the end of the First World War, and famous for its role in the Battle of Britain, IWM Duxford is renowned as one of the world leading aviation museums, housing an extraordinary collection of historic aircraft and artefacts within many original wartime buildings.

See IWM Duxford as it was during the Battle of Britain. Visit the Historic Duxford exhibition where you will hear stories of the many of the men and women who served here and explore the reconstructed Watch Office. Relive a German raid on the airfield in the 1940’s Operations Room.

As an American fighter base from 1943, IWM Duxford is now home to the newly transformed American Air Museum housing the giant B-52 Stratofortress.  At the far end of the site; artillery pieces, tanks, trunks and other historic military vehicles tell the story of the mechanisation of combat in the Land Warfare exhibition.

Today the legacy of the site’s history is assured by IWM (Imperial War Museums) and we look after it for all to enjoy.  Throughout 2017, explore Duxford’s history through our iconic objects – large and small – as we celebrate our Centenary.
