Stories in Collage with Kandace Chimbiri

Author Kandace Chimbiri
Author Kandace Chimbiri, and her book 'The Story of Britain's Black Airmen'.

Join Kandace Chimbiri, author of The Story of the Windrush and Britain’s Black Airmen, for a collage workshop exploring the lives of Britain’s African and Caribbean servicemen and women.

Learn about Sam King, MBE. A Jamaican RAF serviceman who returned to England aboard the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. Follow his story from Jamaica to London, from the RAF to the Mayor of Southwark.

As part of 2024’s Art History Festival, we are exploring and celebrating the theme of 'Global to Local'.

Hear Kandace give a talk and reading, then take part in a collage-making activity.

War to Windrush and Beyond

Over 800 of the men and women who arrived in Tilbury on 22 June 1948 were among thousands of others that journeyed to the UK from the Caribbean in the post-war period. For many of them, it was not an arrival but a return.
