Standard images are suitable for general use. For Photo Archive images, a copy is taken from our archive master scan, cropped to remove rebate and sized. If necessary the image is adjusted to improve contrast and legibility. For contemporary camera images, a copy is taken from our master file and sized.
These images are suitable for use as gifts, in publications, exhibitions and for private display. The images are produced as part of a bespoke service provided by IWM’s skilled Digital Operators. The intention of this process is to restore the image to look as it was when originally taken. Tone and contrast are corrected and any damage, dust or scratches are removed.
Prints from Photo Archive images
All prints are produced on high quality inkjet papers and provide a result similar to that of a traditional photographic print. Some digital restoration will occur to improve the tonal quality of the image but this will be limited.
