Label

Howard makes us look again at the infamous image of Ali Shallal al-Qaisi, one of the Iraqi detainees tortured by US soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in 2003. The following year, US news television aired a report showing the extent of the abuse on al-Qaisi and the other prisoners. This print is taken from Howard's painting, Study, 2005, and honours a man whose name is largely unknown. Her technique obscures the horror of the image somewhat yet the pose of the figure is instantly recognisable.
