REEL 1 Background in Middleton and Oldham, GB, 1921-1939: family; education; employment; membership of 41st (Oldham) Royal Tank Regt in Territorial Army, 1938-1939, including acting as commanding officer's chauffeur; driving first armoured vehicle in Oldham. Aspects of period as trooper with 41st Royal Tank Regt, 24th Army Tank Bde and 24th Armoured Bde in GB, 9/1939-5/1942: naming of regiment's Valentine Tanks; background to posting to Egypt. Aspects of voyage aboard HMT Scythia and HMT Nieuw Amsterdam from GB to Egypt via South Africa, 5/1942-7/1942: voyage aboard HMT Scythia from GB to South Africa, 1941-1942; relations with civilians in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. REEL 2 Continues: transfer to HMT Nieuw Amsterdam at Port Elizabeth, South Africa; conditions on board HMT Nieuw Amsterdam on voyage from South Africa to Egypt; arrival in Egypt.
