REEL 1 Background in GB, 1921-1940: family; interest in horses; reaction to outbreak of Second World War, 3/9/1939; membership of 6th (Arundel) Bn Sussex Home Guard, 1940; employment during construction of anti-tank defences on south coast; duties with Home Guard. Aspects of training as private with Royal Sussex Regiment at Royal Sussex Regiment Regimental Depot at Roussillion Barracks, Chichester, GB, 1940-1941: background to enlistment; initial disadvantage of social origins; attending War Office Selection Board. Aspects of period as officer cadet with No 161 Officer Cadet Training Unit at Royal Military College Sandhurst, Camberley, GB, 5/1941-9/1941: opinion of training; pattern of training; problem drilling troops; Tactical Exercises Without Troops (TEWTS); emphasis placed on an officer looking after his men.
