REEL 1 Background in GB, 1928-1942: family; education. Aspects of period as cadet with Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, GB, 1942-1946: early interest in Royal Navy; reception on arrival; pattern of syllabus; German bombing of college, 1942; organisation of cadets; joining HMS Frobisher for training cruise, 1946. Aspects of period as midshipman aboard HMS Gambia in Far East, 1946-1947: role of midshipmen; ship's duties in Far East; duties; visits to Hong Kong and Japan; role of 'Snotty's Nurse'; attachments to aircraft carrier HMS Victorious and heavy cruiser HMAS Australia.
