REEL 1 Recollections of background in Little Waltham and Great Waltham, 1929-1951: father's military service with Royal Horse Artillery resulting in shell shock and release on disability pension, 1914-1918; social circumstances; education; outbreak of war, 3/9/1939; move into Great Waltham, 9/1939; German air raids on Chelmsford area; issue of gas masks; rationing; education; training with Army Cadets at Tuffnall Hall, Little Waltham; work on milk round, 1944-1946; VE Day celebrations. 8/5/1945; work as farm labourer, 1946-1950; move to work as building labourer to avoid restricted status and allow call up, 1950; call up, 1/1951. Period with 67th (Training) Regt, Royal Artillery, Oswestry, 1/1951-2/1951: reception and kitting out; hair cut; hut accommodation; drill; relationship with recruits. Period with 39 Bty, 38th (Training) Regt, Royal Artillery, Kinmel Park Camp, Rhyl, 2/1951-4/1951: morning routine; food rations; rifle training; PT; relationship with instructors; preparing for kit inspections. REEL 2 Period with 5th Regt Royal Hores Artillery, School of Artillery, Larkhill, 4/1955-8/1951: training on 25pdr and Quad gun tower; fatigues; guard duty; desire for overseas service. Period with draft at Royal Artillery Base Depot, Woolwich Barracks, 8/1951. Voyage with draft aboard Empire Orwell to Kure, Japan, 9/1951-10/1951: reaction to posting to Korea; conditions; route; visits ashore. Aspects of period as gunner with 13 Bty, 45th Field Regt, Royal Artillery in Korea, 10/1951-12/1952: reception; winter conditions; dugout; food rations; prior attending wireless operator signaller course at Kure; role as wireless operator; funeral party; role in support of 1st Bn, Royal Norfolk Regt; rest periods; duties in command post and story of soldier threatening CP with rife; story of accompanying officer on patrol in No Man's Land; story of near jeep accident; local leave in Tokyo, Japan; climate; question of signing for extended service. Voyage aboard Empire Pride to GB, 11/1952-12/1952. Demobilisation, 1/1953. Post-service career; various jobs and work as farm labourer.
