British telegraphist/air gunner trained with Fleet Air Arm in GB, 1943- 1944; petty officer served as telegraphist/air gunner with 836 Sqdn, Fleet Air Arm in Northern Ireland and aboard Empire MacAndrew in Atlantic, 1944-1945

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Coulsden, GB, 1925-1942: family; education; awareness of situation in Europe; unsuccessful application for Y Scheme with Fleet Air Arm; membership of Home Guard; farm work prior to call up. Aspects of training as seaman with Royal Navy at HMS Collingwood, GB, 1942-1943: call up to Royal Navy at HMS Collingwood, 12/1942; accommodation; pattern of training; instructors; background to transferring to Fleet Air Arm. Recollections of enlistment and training as telegrapist/air gunner with Fleet Air Arm in GB, 1943-1944: pattern of training at HMS St Vincent, Gosport. REEL 2 Continues: communication training; move to Royal Naval Air Station, Worthy Down; types of aircraft trained in; wireless training in aircraft; memories of Ron Crayton; relations with officers; opinion of training; opinion of Fairey Swordfish; location of crew in Fairey Swordfish and crew communications.
