REEL 1 Recollections of background Ingleton, 1916-1940: family background and social circumstances; education; work as chauffeur and driver, 1932-1940; outbreak of war, 3/9/1939; call up, 6/1940. Various aspects of training with Royal Army Service Corps, Brighton, 6/1940-9/1940: train journey; conditions of service; drill; rifle and Sten gun training; passing army driving test; relationship with recruits, NCOs and officers. Periods with RASC units at Aldershot, Chesterfield and Luton, 1940-1942: initial role driving staff officers; move to Chesterfield; role moving supplies in 3 ton Bedford lorry; tent accommodation; relationship with civilians and visits to pubs; move to Luton; mill billets; German air raids; embarkation leave and parent's reactions in view of brothers' war service.
REEL 2 Voyage aboard Strathmore to Port Suez, Egypt, 5/1942. Various aspects of service with RASC units in North Africa, Italy and Austria, 1942-1946: period in El Terhag Camp; training; move into Western Desert; retreat back to El Alamein, 6/1942; desert driving; guard duties; conditions of service; latrines; Stuka attacks; slit trenches; barrage prior to Battle of Alamein, 10/1942; role carrying ammunition supplies during advance with 8th Armoured Div; German air attacks; transfer to 56th Div; landings at Salerno and Anzio; role carrying small arms ammunition to forward troops in jeep columns; story of wounded friend; personal morale; move to Adriatic coast; relationship with US troops; advance to Trieste; opinion of jeep including load carried and role pf co-driver.
