REEL 1 Background in Raynes Park and Salisbury, GB, 1925-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as civilian in Sidcup and Salisbury, GB, 1940-1943: move from Salisbury to Sidcup; story of cycling under parachute land mine; return to Salisbury; membership of Army Cadet Corps. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1943: volunteering for Royal Navy; going 'ashore' from Royal Naval Barracks, HMS Victory, Portsmouth; division of swimmers and non-swimmers. Aspects of operations as steward with HMS Pheasant, 7th Escort Group in North Atlantic, 9/1943-12/1943: drafting to ship; convoy escort duties; ashore in St Johns, Newfoundland, 10/1943; seasickness and hammock.
