REEL 1 Background in Birmingham, GB, 1920-1936: family; education; interest in chemistry; cycling activities. Recollections of period as student at University of Birmingham, GB, 1936-1941: early entry into University of Birmingham to read chemistry, 1936; changing attitude towards chemistry; involvement in uranium chemistry; awareness of political situation in Europe during late 1930s; membership of gas decontamination unit at University of Birmingham; importance of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's speeches; taking examinations, 6/1940. REEL 2 Continues: character of 48th (Birmingham University STC) Bn Warwickshire Home Guard unit; dealing with incendiary bomb in Chemistry Department; drill; German Air Force attacks on Birmingham area and during holiday in Wales; use of Anderson Shelter; rationing; cycling in blackout; teaching activities at technical college; employment at gas works.
