REEL 1 Aspects of period as officer with Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, Plymouth, GB, 1938-1940: opinion of training at Royal Naval College Dartmouth prior to joining college; engineering training at college; role of engineer officer; duties of stokers and engineer artificers; course instructors; daily routine. Aspects of period as engineering officer aboard HMS Renown in Mediterranean, 1940-1941: character of battlecruiser; firing of ship's guns; accommodation on board; initial duties with ships boats; refrigerators on board; role of Damage Control Officer (DCO); main threats to ship in Mediterranean; engineering problems with ship. REEL 2 Continues: attending advanced engineering course at Royal Naval College, Greenwich, 1941-1942. Recollections of operations as engineering officer aboard HMS Warspite in Indian Ocean and Mediterranean, 3/1943-1/1944: joining battleship in South Africa, 3/1943; initial impressions of ship; duties; accommodation and rations; speed of ship; vibration problem in ship; bombarding and effects on ship; German Air Force radio controlled FX-1400 (Fritz X) Glider Bomb attack on ship off Salerno, Italy, 16/9/1943; damage to ship and restricted use of boilers; inspecting damage to ship; visit by Fleet Construction Officer (FCO) and his recommendations; move from Malta to Gibraltar; discovery of further damage.
