Content description

REEL 1 Recollections of background in Ontario, Canada Norwich area, 1933-1952: return to GB, 1938; social circumstances; effects of war, 1939-1945; education; movements; work as apprentice cabinet maker; call up, 4/1952. Recollections of basic training at Royal Norfolk Regt Depot, Britannia Barracks, Norwich, 4/1952-6/1952: reception; barrack rooms; preparing for kit inspections; food rations; PT; drill; weapons training including rifle, Bren gun, bayonet and hand grenades; training on Mousehold Heath; relationship with recruits and instructors; competitions between platoons. Period of continuation training at Blenheim Camp, Bury St Edmunds, ca 6/1952-8/1952: tactical training; exercises with territorial parachute unit; avoiding PT instructors course in order to be posted overseas;. Voyage aboard Empire Pride to Hong Kong, ca 8/1952. Recollections of period with 1st Bn, Royal Norfolk Regt at New Territories, Hong Kong, 1952-1954: prior signing on for three years; initial posting to C Coy at Norwegian Farm Camp; learning to drive machine gun carriers on posting to Machine Gun Platoon, Support Coy. REEL 2 Continues: move to Dill's Corner Camp; exercises and training; routine maintenance on Universal Carriers; situation; pay allotment to family; canteen; sporting activities; opinion of Sergeant John Deny; opinion of Vickers machine gun; opinion of Lieutenant Tony Towell; storm; coronation parade; relationship with Hong Kong civilians and visits to Hong Kong; hill running; promotion to corporal; Chinese laundry. Voyage aboard Devonshire to GB, 1954. Period at Roman Way Camp, Colchester, 1954: decision not to become regular; demobilisation. Post service career: work as carpenter, cabinet-maker and fireman; value of military service; membership of Royal Norfolk Regt Assoc.
