REEL 1 Recollections of background in Middlesborough, 1934-1949: family and social background; question of German air raids; rationing; VE Day celebrations, 8/5/1945; training with Army Cadets at Stockton Drill Hall; background to volunteering to join Royal Navy, 1949. Recollections of training as boy telegraphist at HMS Ganges Shore Station, Shotley, ca 11/1949-12/1950: reception and kitting out; hut accommodation; masthead drill; education classes; Morse code, teleprinter and cipher training; question of seamanship training; relationship with boy recruits and instructors. REEL 2 Period as boy telegraphist and telegraphist aboard HMS Cardigan Bay in Far East, 1951-1955: voyage out; reception; nicknames and naval language; communications messdeck and hammocks; relationship with ratings and signals yeoman; games; canteen catering system and food; communication with South Korean sailors taught English by 'Geordie'; watch system and duties in wireless office; patrols off North East coast and islands off Korea; story of HMS Belfast coming under shore battery fire whilst escorting icebreaker; role stopping junks and accompanying boarding parties; opinion of Captain Sir Brian Cecil-Durrant; bridge lookout duty; patrol monitoring ships trading with Formosa; visits ashore at Hong Kong; water polo activities. REEL 4 Continues: story of establishing relationship with Dayak scout during patrol with 1st Bn, Gordon Highlanders in Malaya; volunteering for patrol to check speed of progress possible through Malaya; qualities of Dayak scouts; paying off at Hong Kong, ca 1955; voyage back to GB; reception on arrival home; story of being made to write letters to family. Period as teleprinter operator at Admiralty House, London, 1955-1956: story of meeting future wife; story of contacts with Air Chief Marshal Sir William Dickson and Captain Sir Brian Cecil-Durrant; duties. Period aboard HMS Ark Royal, 1956-1957: volunteering for air crew duties flying in Gannets; leave in Lossiemouth. Period aboard HMS Barrage at Milford Haven, 1957-1959: story of difficulty in locating ship; role salvaging sunken ships blocking harbour. REEL 5 Continues: role salvaging sunken ships blocking harbour; coaling ship; visits ashore; selling illegally salvaged motorcycles; background to leaving RN due to lack of promotion prospects. Post-service career: work in steelworks; work as carpenter; question of contacts with old comrades and membership of Korean Veterans Assoc.
