REEL 1 Aspects of period as officer with 4th Bn Parachute Regt, 2nd Parachute Bde, 1st Airborne Div in GB and North Africa, 1942-1943: background to joining battalion; parachute training; move to North Africa; calling off operation to parachute drop onto Augusta, Sicily, Italy, 1943; impressions of Major-General George Hopkinson. Recollections of operations commanding B Coy, 4th Bn Parachute Regt, 2nd Independent Parachute Bde in Italy, 9/1943-7/1944: move to Taranto and losses amongst 6th Bn Parachute Regt aboard HMS Abdeil in Taranto Harbour, 10/9/1943; company attack against German 1st Parachute Div north of Taranto; advance northwards; impressions of troops of 2nd New Zealand Infantry Div; patrolling, winter 1943-1944; nature of German opposition; conditions at Monte Cassino; capture of commanding officer; amphibious training; training in Salerno area for invasion of Southern France, 6/1944-7/1944.
