Content description

REEL 1 Background in Winterslow, GB, 1928-1947: family; education; employment; village life; further details of education and employment; air activity in area during Second World War. Aspects of enlistment and training as seaman with Royal Navy at HMS Glendower, Pwllheli in GB 1946: reasons for volunteering for Royal Navy; enlistment, 5/1946; issue of uniform; basic training; fire drill. REEL 2 Continues: Recollections of period as stoker aboard submarine HMS Tiptoe, 5th Submarine Flotilla in GB coastal waters and North Sea, 1947-1951: drafting to submarine with 5th Submarine Flotilla at HMNB Portland after training at HMS Dolphin, Gosport, 1947; messing arrangements on board; hygiene and ablutions facilities; duties in engine room; watch system; action station; incident when wrong trim was applied after mine laying exercise; silent running during exercise; making of film 'Morning Departure' in 1949, including presence of actor Richard Attenborough on board; attitude to serving with Submarine Service; recreational activities. REEL 3 Continues: training exercises in Scandinavia waters.
