British stoker served aboard HMS Amethyst in Far East and during Yangtse Incident in China, 1949-1952

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Quenington, GB, 1931-1948: family; education; recreational activities; lack of effects of rationing during Second World War. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1948-1949: reasons for enlisting in Royal Navy; reception at HMS Royal Arthur, Cosham; training as stoker with HMS Raleigh, Torpoint; move to HMS Drake, Devonport. Recollections of period as stoker aboard HMS Amethyst during Yangtse Incident in China, 4/1949: joining sloop in Hong Kong, 7/1949; accommodation and messing arrangements; washing facilities; duties as stoker; clothing worn; conditions in boiler and engine rooms; communications with other parts of the ship; responsibilities for water supply and refrigeration. REEL 2 Continues: duties as stoker; actions stations; recreational activities; attitude to overseas service; discipline on board; pay and method of collecting it; memories of ship's crew and officers; contact with home; voyage up River Yangtse towards Nanking; effects of Chinese People's Liberation Army artillery fire on ship; move onto upper deck; wounding by artillery fire, 19/4/1949; evacuation from ship; hospitalisation for wounds aboard United States Navy hospital ship; duties on upper deck prior to wounding. REEL 3 Continues: rejoining HMS Amethyst in Hong Kong; nature of damage to ship; crew relations; return voyage to GB and reception on arrival.
