REEL 1 Background in Wokingham and Hemel Hempstead, GB and India, 1931-1947: family; move to India, 1941; character of education in India; interest in music; interest in nautical affairs; return to GB, 1947. Aspects of period as naval cadet aboard training ship HMS Conway, 1947-1949: arrival on board ship; character of uniform; adjusting to naval life; education and seamanship lessons; sporting activities; watch keeping activities; discipline; move of ship from Bangor, 1948; fate of ship; recreational activities. REEL 2 Continues: leave in Scotland; leaving training ship, 12/1949. Aspects of training as seaman at Royal Naval Barracks, HMS Victory, Portsmouth, 1950: enlistment at Chatham; pattern of training; daily routine; role training new recruits; messing arrangements; frequency of inspections; sea training; recreational activities.
