REEL 1 Background in South Shields, GB, 1925-1943: family; education; employment grocery errand boy, 1939; declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; use of brick built air raid shelters; blackout; German Air Force raids on South Shields area; employment as apprentice painter and decorator with South Shields Borough Council. Aspects of enlistment and training as seaman at HMS Glendower, Pwllheli, GB, 10/1943-12/1943: call-up for service in Royal Navy, 10/1943; kitting out; conditions of service; assault course; drill; seamanship; choice of specialisation in radar. Aspects of training as radar operator with No 1 Radar Training School, HMS Valkyrie, Douglas Head, Isle of Man, 1/1944-2/1944: accommodation; training on Type 274 Radar; sea training. Recollections of operations as radar operator aboard HMS Duff, 116th Escort Group in GB coastal waters, North Sea and English Channel during Normandy Landings, 3/1944-11/1944 including mining off Ostend, Belgium, 30/11/1944: joining ship at Belfast, Northern Ireland; mess decks and bunks; American style facilities on board; radar cabin and operation of radar set; move to Harwich.
