REEL 1 Background in Kingston upon Hull and Manchester, GB, 1920-1940: family; education in Kingston upon Hull and Manchester; employment, 1939. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1940: reasons for volunteering for Royal Navy, 5/1940; training at HMS Ganges, Shotley; reasons for being turned down for commission; move to Naval Barracks, Devonport; background to volunteering for Submarine Service and subsequent rejection. Aspects of period standing by HMS Prince of Wales in GB, 1941: background to drafting to battleship; reasons for undertaking civilian tasks in bombed Bristol. REEL 2 Continues: work cleaning Lend-Lease former United States Navy destroyers; initial impressions of ship and reasons for reputation as unlucky ship; mess deck he was allocated to; breaking his foot at Scapa Flow. Recollections of operations as seaman aboard HMS Prince of Wales in North Atlantic, 1941: rapid move to sea to pursue the German battleship Bismarck, 5/1941; action station; hits on ship during Bismarck action; bumping into Prime Minister Winston Churchill on crossing North Atlantic to sign Atlantic Charter, 8/1941; shortage of water on board due to Prime Minister Winston Churchill's bathing; repairs to ship in Iceland after Bismarck action and obtaining a piece of tannoy system as souvenir; narrow escape from unexploded shell, 5/1941; incident of hoisting of red material from masts and red paint on turrets; question of ship's role at sea; brief voyage to Mediterranean.
