Content description

REEL 1 Background in GB, 1922-1942: employment as office boy in various film studios; films in production; outbreak of war, 9/1939; call-up for military service, 1/1942; aspects of family background. Aspects of period as private with Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt) and Royal Army Ordnance Corps, GB, 1942: infantry training; transfer to Royal Army Ordnance Corps; clerical work; volunteering for Glider Pilot Regiment. Aspects of period as pilot with D Sqdn, No 1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt in GB and North West Europe, 1943-1945: flying training; glider training; posting to D Sqdn at RAF Keevil; flying Airspeed Horsa Glider; landing glider; preparations for operation to Falaise Gap, France and cancellation of operation, 8/1944. REEL 2 Continues: preparations for Operation Market Garden. Recollections of operations as glider pilot with D Sqdn, No 1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt during Operation Market Garden in Netherlands, 9/1944: landing and renderzvous at Wolfheze; advance towards Arnhem under German fire; arrival at Oosterbeek; house-to-house fighting; German artillery shelling of position and death of co-pilot; living conditions; Germany weaponry; order to withdrawl; journey to Nijmegen, Netherlands, move to Louvain, Belgium; return to GB, Aspects of operations as glider pilot with D Sqdn, No 1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt during Operation Varsity, Germany, 3/1945: preparations for Operation Varsity, 1945; nature of landing; coming under German attack; capture by German forces. Aspects of period as prisoner of war in Stalag 357 Fallingbostel, Germany, 3/1945-4/1945: transportation to Stalag 357 Fallingbostel; treatment by Germans; marching east to River Elbe, then back westwards; release; commandeering motor cycle.
