REEL 1 Background in Rotherham GB, 1917-1938: family; education; employment as miner including handling pit ponies and accident. Aspect of enlistment and training with King's Own Scottish Borderers in GB, 1938-1939: reasons for volunteering for army; opinion of basic training at King's Own Scottish Borderers Regimental Depot, Berwick Barracks, Berwick-on-Tweed; posting to 1st Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers at Portsmouth. Recollections of operations as private with 7 Platoon, A Coy, 1st Bn King's Own, 9th Infantry Bde, 3rd Infantry Div in France and Belgium, 10/1939-6/1940: arrival at Cherbourg, France, 10/1939; move to Fretin, France on border with Belgium; exercises in Somme Valley, France; transfer to carrier platoon; move to Roubaix, France, 10/5/1940; advance to Aalst then Louvain, Belgium; digging in on River Dyle, Belgium; role of carrier platoon during action on River Dyle, Belgium; German Air Force attack on refugees; move to Dunkirk Perimeter at Furnes, Belgium; role of carrier platoon protecting rearguard; loss of Bren Gun Carrier; trek to Dunkirk, France; queuing for evacuation under German Air Force attack, 6/1940.
