Content description

REEL 1 Background in Rüchow, Germany, 1926-1939: family; education including period at boarding school. Period as schoolboy in Germany, 1939-1944: father's call-up for military service, 9/1939; attitude towards outbreak of Second World War, 3/9/1939; presence of Polish prisoners of war in Mecklenburg-Western Pomernia; Royal Air Force incendiary raid on Rostock; military training prior to call up; food supply; service with German Labour Service in Danzig, 4/1944; sight of United States Army Air Force raid on Stettin; pressure at his school to join Waffen-SS and his volunteering for German Air Force. REEL 2 Continues: Aspects of enlistment and training with German Air Force in Germany and Belgium, 1944: glider training in Pomerania, 6/1944; call-up to German Air Force, 22/7/1944 and universalising of Hitler salute; training in Brussels and Groningen, Belgium, 8/1944-9/1944. Recollections of operations as private with 9th Parachute Division in North West Europe, 1944-1945: joining unit at Venlo, Netherlands, 11/1944; absence of heavy equipment and infantry equipment available; his going into action with helmet full of vomit in Goch/Cleve area, Germany, 2/1945; capture of bridge in Reichswald Forest, Germany. Recollections of capture and period as prisoner of war in Belgium, 1945: capture by British Army troops, 1/3/1945; anxiety to get rid of his weapon; treatment for lice; impression of Allied equipment; move to prisoner of war camp near Ostend; conditions in camp and treatment in Canadian Army military hospital in Ostend.
