Content description

REEL 1 Background in Dehra Dun, India and South Africa, 1919-1938: family; education; enlistment in British Army. Aspects of period as officer with British Indian Army in India, 1939-1940: arrival at Bombay; attachment to 2nd Bn Royal Berkshire Regt at Benares; character of Queen Victoria's holiday. Recollections of period as officer commanding D Coy, 1/9th Gurkha Rifles in India and Middle East, 1940-1943: joining unit at Bannu on North West Frontier, 1/1940; duties; degree to which his unit came under fire on patrols; opinion of Gurkhas; preparations for modern warfare from 5/1940; move to Iraq; under canvass at Basra, winter 1941- 1942. REEL 2 Continues: move to Iran, early 1942; handling Polish personnel coming out of Soviet Union at Hamadan, Iran; plans to check advance of Germans through Soviet Union and Iran; reasons for rapid move to join 5th Indian Infantry Bde, 4th Indian Div in Egypt, 6/1942; move to Aleppo, French Syria to check potential German advance through Turkey.
