Content description

REEL 1 Background in Pontypridd and Slough, GB, 1924-1941: family; education; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; employment; degree of German Air Force bombing in Slough area. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1942-1943: enlistment; initial stoker training at HMS Duke, Great Malvern, summer 1942; duties at Yarmouth; drafting to elderly destroyer HMS Ripley including conditions on board. Aspects of operations with HMS Myngs, 2nd Destroyer Flotilla, Home Fleet in Arctic, 1944-1945: restrictive life for stokers during Arctic convoys; degree to which destroyer was attacked during Arctic convoys. Recollections of period as stoker aboard HMS Belfast, British Pacific Fleet in Pacific, 1945-1946: joining cruiser in Newcastle upon Tyne, GB, 5/1945; bread and water punishment he received; attempt to use tonsils as excuse to leave ship; rats on board; duties in boiler room. REEL 2 Continues: incident of rating who obtained access to rum; freedom of Perth, Australia on VJ Day, 15/8/1945; hospitality of Australians towards Royal Navy; selling £1 notes to United States Navy sailors for $4; visit to Japan; gratuity he received on leaving Royal Navy; delights of living ashore in Newcastle upon Tyne, GB, 1944.
