Content description

REEL 1 Background in Norwich, GB, 1926-1943: family; education; employment; training with Army Cadet Corps at Bourne. Aspects of operations as private with 1st Bn Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own), 7th Armoured Div in North West Europe, 1944-1945: death of section commander in Belgium, 1944; nature of fighting in polders in Netherlands; role as Bren Gun operator; co-operation with M4 Sherman Tanks; temporarily blinding by German anti-tank weapon; loss of his teeth due to shrapnel in his gum; sight of Admiral Karl Doenitz surrendering, 5/1945. Aspects of post-war marriages to German wives: demobilisation question, 1945. REEL 2 Continues: becoming officer's batman; meeting his first wife; his marriage to his second wife from East Germany problems crossing into East Germany during Czechoslovakian Crisis, 8/1968; meeting with second wife in Celle, West Germany; conditions of in-laws in Cottbus, East Germany. Aspects of period as civilian in GB, 1947-1951: reasons for rejoining British Army, 5/1951; employment digging up corpses for repatriation at Cambridge American Cemetery, 1947; attitude to working for American personnel; reasons for rejoining British Army, 5/1951. Recollections of operations as medical orderly with 1st Bn Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own), 39th Infantry Bde in Kenya, 11/1954-6/1956: role as medical orderly. REEL 3 Continues: train journey from Mombasa to Nairobi, 11/1954; basing of battalion headquarters at Mount Kenya; infestation of locusts; disposal of pay; handling medical patients; dealing with venereal cases; British Army issue of condoms; danger from wild animals; appearance of Mau Mau insurgents; effect of Royal Air Force bombing of Mount Kenya; participation in a night patrol; curing chief's wife of her aches and pains; question of lack of fear on patrol.
