Content description

REEL 1 Background in Chelmsford, GB, 1922-1940: family; education; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; reaction to sight of guardsman; membership of 6th (Chelmsford) Bn Essex Home Guard. Aspects of enlistment, training and service with Grenadier Guards in GB, 1941-1944: background to volunteering for Grenadier Guards via Irish Guards; infestation of fleas at Guards Regimental Depot, Caterham; transfer to Grenadier Guards; role of trained soldier; question of why he was chosen for tank training; training as wireless operator; period as instructor at Guards Training Depot, Pirbright; meeting with his first wife in Woking. Recollections of operations as NCO with 1 Sqdn, 4th (Armoured) Bn Grenadier Guards, 6th Guards Tank Bde in North West Europe, 8/1944-5/1945: transfer to battalion in France, 8/1944; role as tank commander; in action at Meijel, near Helmond, Netherlands. REEL 2 Continues: recuperating at Helmond including being drilled; attitude of Dutch civilians and French civilians; character of Allied artillery bombardment prior to attack on Siegfried Line, Germany; crossing River Rhine at Wesel, Germany; behaviour of United States Army airborne troops on River Rhine, Germany, 3/1945; advance through Germany; troop leader casualties; role of tank pannier doors in escaping; action near Hanover, Germany in which he won Military Medal, 4/1945. REEL 3 Continues: occupation of area around Kiel, Germany, 5/1945; escape of Waffen-SS troops in boats into Baltic Sea; behaviour of captured Waffen-SS men.
